Basil Simple Syrup
- 1 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water (for simple syrup)
Lemonade
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6–8 lemons)
- 4–5 cups cold water (for diluting)
- Lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
- Basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)
- Ice cubes
- Make the Basil Simple Syrup: Combine the granulated sugar and 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is fully dissolved, about 3–5 minutes.
- Infuse the Basil Flavor: Add the packed fresh basil leaves to the saucepan and gently press them down into the syrup. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 10–15 minutes to allow the basil flavor to infuse, making sure it doesn’t boil.
- Steep the Basil: Remove the syrup from heat and let the basil steep for at least 30 minutes or longer if a stronger basil flavor is desired.
- Strain the Syrup: Strain the basil-infused syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean jar or container, discarding the basil leaves. Allow the syrup to cool completely. Store it refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
- Prepare the Lemon Juice: Select ripe lemons that are heavy and have smooth, thin skins for maximum juice. Roll lemons firmly on a countertop to loosen juices. Juice the lemons using a citrus juicer, removing any seeds.
- (Optional) Strain Lemon Juice: Strain the lemon juice through a fine-mesh sieve to remove pulp for a smoother lemonade.
- Assemble the Lemonade: In a large pitcher, combine 1 cup of the cooled basil simple syrup with 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 4 cups of cold water. Stir well to mix all ingredients.
- Adjust Sweetness and Tartness: Taste the lemonade and adjust sweetness or tartness by adding more simple syrup if it is too tart, or more lemon juice or water if it’s too sweet. If the lemonade is too concentrated, add the remaining 1 cup of cold water or more until desired strength is reached.
- Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the assembled lemonade for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Serve over ice cubes.
- Garnish: Garnish each serving with lemon slices and fresh basil sprigs if desired to enhance the presentation and aroma.
Notes
- For a stronger basil flavor, steep the basil leaves in the syrup longer before straining.
- Adjust the sweetness and tartness according to personal preference by varying the amounts of syrup, lemon juice, and water.
- Use fresh, ripe lemons for the best flavor; avoid overly ripe or hard lemons.
- The basil simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- Serve chilled over plenty of ice for a refreshing summer drink.
- Optional: Add sparkling water instead of still water for a fizzy version of this lemonade.
