Ingredients

Scale

Ice Cream Base

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice (about 23 oranges)
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest (from about 1 large orange)

Instructions

  1. Combine the ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, fresh orange juice, and orange zest until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is uniform.
  2. Initial freezing: Pour the mixture into a shallow, freezer-safe container. Place it in the freezer for about 1 hour.
  3. Stir occasionally: Every 30 minutes, remove the container from the freezer and vigorously stir the mixture with a fork or whisk to break up ice crystals and incorporate air. Repeat this step 3–4 times over 2 to 3 hours until the ice cream is firm and creamy.
  4. Final chilling: Once firm, cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap and freeze for an additional 2–3 hours to fully set before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra smooth texture, you can strain the mixture before freezing to remove any pulp or zest bits.
  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor.
  • If you have an ice cream maker, you can use it to churn the mixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions for a faster, creamier result.
  • Store leftover ice cream airtight in the freezer for up to 1 week.
