Bread Dough
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Layering
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy. Add the flour, remaining sugar, salt, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Roll out dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle about 12×16 inches on a floured surface.
- Layer with butter and cinnamon sugar: Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough rectangle. Mix the sugar and cinnamon together, then sprinkle it generously over the buttered dough.
- Shape the bread: Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into slices about 1 1/2 inch thick and place them into a greased loaf pan standing up next to each other with the cut side up.
- Second rise: Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden on top and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Remove the bread from the oven, let it cool slightly in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature for the best gooey texture.
Notes
- For extra gooeyness, brush the browned top with melted butter immediately after baking.
- You can sprinkle additional cinnamon sugar on top before baking for a crunchy crust.
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze slices for longer storage.
- If you prefer, swap all-purpose flour with bread flour for a chewier texture.
