A classic Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich recipe featuring thinly sliced ribeye steak, caramelized onions, and bell peppers, topped with melted provolone cheese and served on soft hoagie rolls. Perfect for a comforting and flavorful meal ready in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 pound ribeye steak (or sirloin), thinly sliced

Vegetables

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

Other Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for a traditional option)
  • Optional toppings: sliced mushrooms, hot peppers, or additional cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: If your ribeye steak is not pre-sliced, freeze it for about 30 minutes to make slicing easier. Then, slice the steak against the grain into very thin strips. Thinly slice the onion and bell pepper, if using.
  2. Cook the Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers and sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft and caramelized. Season with salt and pepper, then remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Steak: Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil to the same skillet and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced steak and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until browned and cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Combine Ingredients: Return the sautéed onions and bell peppers to the skillet with the cooked steak. Stir to combine and heat through evenly.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise, leaving one side intact for holding. Fill each roll with the steak and vegetable mixture. Top with 2 slices of provolone cheese or a generous amount of Cheez Whiz. Optionally, place the sandwiches under a broiler for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese.
  6. Serve: Serve the Philly cheesesteak sandwiches hot with optional toppings like hot peppers, sliced mushrooms, or additional cheese for extra flavor.

Notes

  • Freezing the steak slightly before slicing helps achieve thin, uniform slices.
  • Caramelizing the onions and peppers enhances their natural sweetness and flavor.
  • Using provolone cheese gives a creamy melt, but Cheez Whiz is traditional for an authentic Philly style.
  • Broiling the assembled sandwich briefly melts the cheese and warms the bread for a delicious finish.
  • Optional toppings like mushrooms or hot peppers can add customized flavor and texture.
