4.6 from 112 reviews

This Pizza Hut–Style Dough recipe yields a soft, chewy, and flavorful pizza crust reminiscent of the beloved chain’s iconic base. Ideal for homemade pizzas, the dough is simple to prepare with basic ingredients and creates a perfect foundation for a variety of toppings.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or olive oil)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast over the surface. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and oil, stirring until a rough dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky, adding small amounts of flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
  4. Let the dough rise: Lightly oil a clean bowl and place the dough inside, turning it once to coat. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down and shape: Gently punch the dough down to release air. Divide if making multiple pizzas, and shape the dough into rounds or rectangles on a floured surface or pizza pan, stretching or rolling to your desired thickness.
  6. Bake the pizza: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). Add your favorite sauce, cheese, and toppings, then bake for 12-15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • Warm water is essential for activating the yeast properly; too hot or cold water can kill or under-activate it.
  • For a softer texture, you can substitute part of the flour with bread flour.
  • Letting the dough rise longer (up to 24 hours refrigerated) develops more flavor.
  • Use a pizza stone or preheated baking steel for an even crispier crust.
  • Oil your hands when shaping the dough to prevent sticking without adding extra flour.
